NASCAR Racing Demo

Install and Setup
Insert NASCAR Racing Demo disk in drive A: or B:. Type A: or B: <enter>.
Type INSTALL <enter> to begin the installation program. Follow the directions
on screen to install the demo to your hard drive. When installation is
complete, you will be given the option to Change Sound Card. Select this
option and select your sound card from the list. If you have no sound card
be sure to select the option for None. Follow the prompts to select the
proper sound card setup. Once these things have been done you are ready to
run the NASCAR Racing demo. Select Exit to DOS from the menu.
Interactive Demo
The NASCAR Racing interactive demo will allow you to drive a few laps
around the Talladega Superspeedway, a 2.66 mile oval dubbed "the fastest
track in the world." To run the Interactive Demo, change directory to the
C:\NASDEMO directory (or specify the directory name that you chose during
installation), by typing CD\NASDEMO <enter>. Type NASDEMO -I <enter> to
start the program. Any option within the program which is grayed out is
not available to you in the demo version.
Options - From the main menu you should choose "Options", then "Controls".
Then, you should choose "Set Controls" and choose how you would like to
control the driving in the game. We support all types of joysticks/flight
yokes as well as many wheel/pedal driving units. Once the controls are set,
calibrate the joystick. If you are playing with just a joystick you only
need to "Calibrate Joystick 1". If you are using a wheel/pedal unit you
must calibrate both joysticks and should also change your steering from
"Non-linear steering" to "Linear Steering." If you are using the keyboard
you don't have to calibrate any joystick.
All the graphics options are on automatic detail by default. This
means that if the frame rate of the simulation falls below the "minimum frame
rate," that detail option could be turned off, and if the frame rate becomes
greater than the "maximum frame rate," that detail could be turned on.
You can change these to tune the demo to work well with your machine. If you
have a slower machine, we suggest you turn off the asphalt and grass textures.
You can also turn these options on or off while you are driving. The
following number keys control these options:
1 - grass
2 - asphalt
3 - objects (on/off/none)
4 - grandstands
5 - walls
6 - horizon
7 - cars
8 - smoke/dirt
9 - skids/painted lines
Driving Aids - The only driving aid you can select for the demo version
which has any effect is "Automatic Shifting" or "Manual Shifting."
Sound - All the sound settings can be changed. To turn a sound off, reduce
the volume level to 0.
Driver Info
This option will allow you to scroll through a list of some of the
drivers on the NASCAR circuit. Select "Driver Info", "Opponents", and "Next"
or "Previous" to view these drivers. In the game you will be able to change
all of the info which appears in the lower right box, and with the included
paintkit utility you will be able to change the car graphics themselves.
Preseason Testing
This option will allow you to take a spin around Talladega. Select
"Preseason Testing" and then "Talladega". (The game will come with 9 NASCAR
tracks - Atlanta, Bristol, Darlington, Loudon, Martinsville, Michigan,
Phoenix, Talladega, and Watkins Glen). You will now be at the preseason
testing menu.
Select "Testing" to take a spin around Talladega. You'll start out in the
pits. You have enough fuel to run a couple of laps. Pressing "F10" will
change the driving mode to two different outside-the-car views. Press "F10"
again to return to the cockpit view. Once you are out of fuel, press "Esc"
to return to the preseason menu and then select "Replay" to view your racing.
Replay - The space bar will start/stop the action. The "<" and ">" keys will
rewind and fast forward the replay. The "C" key will change to different
camera angles. Press "Esc" to return to the preseason testing menu.
None of the replay buttons have any effect in the demo version.
Self-Running Demo
The self-running demo will allow you to view a demo of NASCAR
Racing. To run the Self-Running Demo, change directory to the
C:\NASDEMO directory (or specify the directory name that you chose during
installation), by typing CD\NASDEMO <enter>. Type NASDEMO -S <enter> to
start the program. Once this is done the program will load and the demo
will begin. The demo will replay continuously unless you choose to exit.
To exit the demo, press "Esc" when the demo is at the credits screen or
the screen with the order information. Both screens are displayed at the
end of the demo.
Troubleshooting
The demo requires at least 3Mb of RAM free to run. If you do not
have enough memory, try using a boot disk. (If you need to create a boot
disk, refer to the section below titled "Creating a Boot Diskette".) Place
the start up disk in Drive A: and reboot your system. When you come to a
prompt, type C: <enter>. Type CD\NASDEMO <enter>. Type NASDEMO -I or
NASDEMO -S <enter> to begin the demo.
If you have less than 3MB free, a message will appear to let you
know this. You can choose to avoid the memory check by typing
NASDEMO -I -O <enter> to start the interactive version of the demo.
You may be able to see everything available in the demo with the
exception of loading the track and driving. Do not attempt to load the
self running version of the demo using the -O switch.
Creating a Boot Diskette
The purpose of creating a boot diskette will be to limit the number of
drivers that are loaded in order to maximize memory, while at the same time,
providing you the minimum drivers necessary to run the demo with your unique
system configuration (i.e. CD-ROM drive, sound board, etc.).
Because NASCAR Racing uses a built-in memory manager, it is highly
recomended that you do not use the DOS memory manager (EMM386) or any third
party memory managers (i.e. QEMM, 386MAX, etc.).
To create a boot disk, do the following:
1. Insert a blank diskette into drive A & type FORMAT A: /S
2. Follow the DOS prompts to format the disk & return to the C:\> prompt.
3. Add the drivers for your CD-ROM drive into your AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS files. The easiest way to do this is to copy the
appropriate lines from the CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT files on your
hard drive to their respective files on the boot diskette. If you
are not sure of which driver(s) to load, refer to the documentation
for your CD-ROM drive. *** If you use a memory manager on your
system and you will not be using that memory manager on the boot
diskette (recomended), make sure to remove any memory manager
specific instructions when you copy the device driver lines to the
boot diskette (for example, if you use EMM386 change DEVICEHIGH
to DEVICE in CONFIG.SYS, remove LOADHIGH & LH in AUTOEXEC.BAT, etc.).
4. If your system has an audio board and it requires a device driver
in order to operate in a DOS environment, do the following:
- Copy the device driver(s) from your hard drive to the boot diskette.
- Edit your CONFIG.SYS file and/or AUTOEXEC.BAT file to add the
necessary lines to load the audio driver(s). If you are not sure
of which driver(s) to load, refer to the documentation for your
audio board.
NASCAR Racing Feature List
Here are some of the features which can be found in the release
version of NASCAR Racing:
1. SVGA Mode (640x480)
The high resolution mode requires at least a 486 DX2/66 MHz with
8MB RAM to run. You must also have a VESA video driver loaded
to run the high resolution version.
2. Digital Sound
All the sounds in the game, the engines, skidding, pit noises, have
been digitized. In addition, stereo sound will be available on those
sound boards which can support it.
3. Officially licensed NASCAR game
Real drivers, cars, teams, tracks, and sponsors.
4. Realistic Crashes
When the car hits a wall or another car, depending on how hard the
impact is, pieces will fly off. Cars will continue to race in
different damage conditions.
5. Realistic Stockcar Physics
The car will drive like an actual stockcar. More weight, combined
with a lot less downforce makes this a different driving experience
compared to IndyCar Racing.
6. 9 Real NASCAR Tracks
Talladega Superspeedway - This is a 2.66 mile superspeedway. It has
the distinction of being the fastest track on the NASCAR
circuit with speeds upwards of 200 mph.
Michigan International Speedway - This is a 2 mile superspeedway.
Atlanta Motor Speedway - This is a 1.522 mile speedway.
Darlington Raceway - This is a 1.366 mile oval which is called the
track that is "too tough to tame". It is known as a very
difficult track to drive because of its tight corners.
New Hampshire International Speedway - This is a 1.058 mile oval.
Phoenix International Raceway - This is a 1 mile tri-oval.
Bristol International Raceway - This is a .533 half mile oval known
for its 36 degrees of banking.
Martinsville Speedway - This is a .526 flat half mile oval. It is
known for its tight, flat corners.
Watkins Glen International - This is a 2.454 mile road course.
7. Special help features - steering help, auto-shifting, and auto-braking.
These features will help the novice racer get their feet wet before
taking on the real challenge.
8. Outside, behind the car drive mode. Similar to the chase replay view in
IndyCar Racing.
9. Improved opponent AI.
10. Music from Team Fat.
11. Frame rate up to 30fps (with a really fast machine).
12. Realistic Car setup options including spoiler adjustments, tire pressures,
stagger, camber, weight jacking, plus a lot more.
